Kchag Renovation Day

The only way to connect the young generation to a place is by involving them in community services and projects where hands would work together to make a lasting change, minds would be filled with great memories and a positive mark would be left behind.

After many years of neglect, on May 29, 2010, the badaneez of the Armenian Evangelical Marash Church and Trad Social Center joined hands and put on marvelous efforts plucking out the decade-long weeds that had sprouted all over the open-air basketball court of Kchag Summer Camp. Another group of boys emptied two cluttered cottage rooms, located on the left of Kchag perimeter, of rusty beds, an antique cooker, tarnished drawers, and a weighty refrigerator that had still been kept intact. A third group of seniors cut down tree branches around the court that had been unattended for so long.

Even though what was achieved was only a fraction of the huge renovation plan, we believe in a living God who has conquered over calamity and despair and has given us an enduring strength to rebuild that which was destroyed and to persevere when all hope had vanished.

The main objective of the Kchag committee for this year is to have the campus geared up with the necessary number of cottages in time to have our first revival hamakoomar on the very premises of our beloved Kchag Summer Camp!

AMAA interns to experience camp life in Lebanon

Paramus, N.J. - The Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA) is pleased to announce plans for its Third Annual Summer Internship Program. This year, the program will find itself at Camp KCHAG in Lebanon.

The name "KCHAG" is an acronym which in Armenian stands for Krisdonyagan CHanitz Amarnayin Getron (Christian Endeavor Summer Center). This name represents a camp encounter that made its mark on the lives of many Armenians in Lebanon. KCHAG was the popular Christian camp where hundreds of Armenian children, youth and adult campers had inspiring experiences. The camp, located on the beautiful Monte Verde (Green Mountain) overlooking Beirut, is a 5 acre beautiful area covered by green cedar trees. It was purchased by Armenian Evangelicals in 1949 and was steadily developed to host hundreds of campers and also families that took refuge from the hot, humid summer of Beirut and enjoyed God's presence. For three months in summer, the camp would host various groups.

Then came the Lebanese Civil War and, unfortunately, this beautiful camp also became a casualty of war. Seven different militia groups occupied the camp for over two decades (1978-2002) and used it as a military base. Years of occupation however did not deter the faithful to pray and make every effort to have the camp returned to its rightful owners. That great day came, but there was much sorrow. The camp property and building, including the chapel, dining hall and the cabins were heavily damaged and some totally destroyed.

The Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East (UAECNE) and the Armenian Evangelical Christian Endeavor Union of Lebanon and Syria immediately went into action and prepared plans for the total restoration of the camp. This will cost a fortune that they will not be able to afford. They pray that God will lead generous donors to support this vital project and bring life back to this camp.

The AMAA, who has supported this camp for many years, would like to see the camp rebuilt. It is one of the camp projects being solicited as part of the Capital Campaign.

A scene from camp KCHAG

To lend its support, AMAA's internship program this summer (July 11-28) will concentrate on renovating one building and thus begin the arduous process of preparing the camp for complete renovation. This unforgettable experience will be structured to immerse each intern in the culture and in time with the Lord, offering many opportunities for learning and self-reflection. A personal connection between the interns and the local people will be established, living and working side-by-side with them, creating a feeling of solidarity among those who continually strive for a better life.

Young women and men of age 18 and above are encouraged to participate in this program, travel to Lebanon to learn, labor and have an experience of a lifetime.

To participate or to support this project financially, please contact the AMAA office at (201) 265-2607. Applications are available on the AMAA website - amaa.org.

The former members of the Junior Christian Endeavor Organization of the First American Evangelical Church of Beirut, Lebanon, hosted a dinner and program on January 17, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., in the Derian Hall of the Armenian Cilicia Evangelical Church, in Pasadena, California. The guest of honor for the evening was Rev. Dr. John Khanjian, who was the organization’s prominent Youth Leader and Scoutmaster during the years of 1957 to 1962.
Rev. Kevork Terian, Pastor of the Cilicia Church, gave the invocation. He thanked God for the virtuous character and dedicated service of Dr. Khanjian, who has been a role model to his students.
Zaven Demirjian described some of the activities of the scouts. He stated that the church provided a room, that was used as a meeting place and storage area. Tents and sleeping bags were purchased at a discount from Hagop Salibian’s business. The scouts went on camping trips to different mountain locations, such as Brummana. In the winter a popular trip by train was the snow covered mountain at Dahr El Baydar.
Nishan Basmadjian presented the biography of Dr. Khanjian who was born in Aleppo Syria. He graduated from Near East School of Theology and the American University of Beirut in 1962. He also graduated from Claremont Graduate School with a Ph.D. degree in 1974. He has taught at Aleppo College,Near East School of Theology, Kansas Wesleyan University and University of La Verne. He was Dean of Students from 1987 to 1993 at the Armenian International College/University of La Verne, where Nishan also worked as Librarian. From 1995 to 2002 he was President of Haigazian College, which became a University in 1997. At Haigazian University he upgraded the academic program, the infrastructure, including the renovating and moving back to the old campus in West Beirut. Presently he is the Provost of the Evangelical Theological Academy (Seminary) of Armenia in Yerevan, which aims at training ministers and Christian workers.
Some of the former scouts shared interesting events and experiences.
Dr. Steven H. Aharonian stated that he had served with Dr. Khanjian in the Haigazian University Board. As the President of AMAA he regarded the success of the Seminary in Armenia very important for him. He was confident that Dr. Khanjian will apply his administrative experience in laying a solid foundation for the Seminary.
Dr. Vicken Aharonian appreciated the fact that his father, Rev. Hovhannes Aharonian, the President of the Near East School of Theology, had assigned Dr. Khanjian to be Youth Leader and Scoutmaster. He recalled a camping trip at the Litany River, where the scouts tried to catch frogs.
Dr. Ara Tilkian said that his father, Rev. Garabed Tilkian, being the Pastor of our church in Beruit was very busy, and he was glad that Dr. Khanjian was helping him by working with the youth. He also reminded us about “Kchag” Summer Camp, located on a beautiful Lebanese mountain covered with pine trees. Christian Endeavor groups held their summer camps and retreats in “Kchag.”
Dr. Ivan Shnorhokian reminded us about an injury to his nose after a scary fall at a campsite. First aid was applied, the wound healed, and no trace of injury remained.
A plaque was given to Dr. Khanjian in appreciation of his services to our organization. He was grateful for the affection shown to him, and he said he still considered his scouts to be adolescent “badani” at heart.
The scouts were thankful to their Scoutmaster for teaching them survival skills, endurance, moral values and to be “always ready” to serve the Lord, the church and humanity.

The Last Kchag Café for the Summer of 2009

This year, the last Kchag Café was simply amazing. While the whole organizing team had planned the Armenian event outside, under the sun, the weather surprised everyone and it rained, and we found ourselves running for cover and shelter. Fortunately, the church building of Kchag was very close. In ten minutes, the place was prepared to contain around 100 participants.

Mrs. Yester Kilaghbian, the yeretzgin of the Armenian Evangelical Church in Ashrafieh, presented about the Ladies Camp in Kessab, Syria, with Rev. Krikor AghabalOghlu as the speaker from Turkey.
Then, Ms. Nanor performed several Armenian songs.
We had a guest from the Danish-Armenian Mission from Denmark, Mr. Mikkel Bandak, who also shared about the mission's history and the relationship of the Danish people with the Armenians, and how it all started during 1915 and after the Genocide.

All in all, we've never had a Kchag Café like this before. It surely is a year to be remembered.

Kchag Café, Singing Contest

A singing contest was held during Kchag Café, where the participants were divided into two groups and the moderator, Manoug Chilingirian, would give a letter, and the group will try to find a song starting with the letter and sing. The second group would wait to find out with which letter the first group's song ended with, and try to find a song that starts with that letter.
The two groups were divided equally, and despite the first group's enthusiasm and team spirit, the second group was able to come out victorious. Oh well, better luck next time :)
