Ցաւով իմացանք վախճանումը մեր սիրելի վեր. Յովհաննէս Գարճեանին։ Եթէ նկարագրենք վերապատուելիին կեանքը, պէտք է ըսենք՝ «Կեանք մը համակ նուիրումի»։ Եւ նուիրումը վեր. Գարճեանի համար Քրիստոս եւ Անոր եկեղեցին էր, հայ ժողովուրդը, Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցին եւ մարդկութիւնը ամբողջ։

Ան նուիրումով ծառայեց Քրիստոսի եւ հայ ժողովուրդին՝ Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիներու միութեան դաշտին մէջ՝ վերցնելով շատ մը պատասխանատու պաշտօններ։ Այս իմաստով, վեր. Գարճեանի հետ բաւական երկար եղաւ իմ գործակցութիւնս։ Այս երկար ճամբուն մէջ, վերապատուելին առաջնորդեց, ղեկավարեց, յորդորեց եւ քաջալերեց։ Եղաւ հովիւ, առաջնորդ, բայց անպայմանօրէն նաեւ հայր եւ բարեկամ։ Վեր. Գարճեանի հետ մեր «երկար ճամբան» կերտած է յարգանքը, բարեկամութիւնը եւ հաղորդակցութիւնը։ Իր նուիրագործուած կեանքը եղաւ մէկ խօսուն օրինակ՝ մեր հոգիներուն մէջ դրոշմելով սէրը Քրիստոսի, Անոր խօսքին եւ Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցւոյ նկատմամբ։

Կը բաժնենք ձեր բոլորին ցաւը։ Եւ եթէ տխուր ենք այսօր՝ վեր. Գարճեանի վախճանումին առիթով, բայց նաեւ փառք կու տանք Աստուծոյ անոր կեանքին համար։ Կեանք մը, որ անդադար տրոփեց Քրիստոսի եւ հայ ժողովուրդի ծառայութեան սիրով՝ եւ այդ ծառայութեան գործընթացին մէջ ոչ մէկ ջանք չխնայեց։ Վեր. Գարճեանի կեանքի պատգամը՝ նուիրագործուած կեանք Քրիստոսի, եկեղեցիին եւ հայ ժողովուրդին ծառայութեան համար։

Անձնապէս, նաեւ Արտային, Վահէին եւ Ալիքին, ու Կիպրոսի Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիին անունով ընդունեցէք մեր ցաւակցութիւնները։ Կը հայցենք Սուրբ Հոգիին մխիթարութիւնը ձեր բոլորին համար։

Reverend Haroutioun Selimian elected president of the Armenian Evangelical World Council

Reverend Haroutioun Selimian, who has been president of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria since 2004 is the first Syrian Armenian to receive this position, that he will hold until 2010.

The elections were held at the headquarters of the Armenian Missionary Association of America in New Jersey, USA, in October 2008, in the presence of the five Unions of Armenian evangelical churches, (Near East, France, Armenia Euro-Asia, North America).

On 24 November 2008 Aleppo's Al-Jamahir daily's reporter Bianka Madia had an interview with Reverend Haroutioun Selimian. Below are parts of the interview translated by Nanor Mikayelian.

What new responsibilities lie ahead of you after this new position as president of the Armenian Evangelical World Council (AEWC)?
The main responsibility is to coordinate among the five Armenian Evangelical church unions in the world. The Council holds a meeting once a year in USA and has ecclesial, ecumenical and cultural activities and cooperates with charitable organizations worldwide.

Are these cultural activities merely related to theology and philosophy or they are cultural in a wider sense?
The Council is interested in any issue related to educating and civilizing the individual so that he would be an efficient member of his society.

What about the Christian - Muslim dialogue?
I think there has always been an inter-faith dialogue between Christians and Muslims in the region, and we have always co-existed in harmony, something that surprises all visitors to Syria, which must serve as an example of tolerance and for all the world.

What was the first feeling or thought that occurred to you the minute you were appointed president?
Well, it was definitely the feeling of enormous responsibility. I look at it as a position through which I can serve others, rather than a position of privilege. May God bless this duty and vocation and give me the wisdom and sagacity to serve every church and every single member around me.

First degree in Theology and Psychology, Lebanon (1988)
Masters degree in Divinity from Chicago (1992)
Certificate in Ecumenical Leadership, the Ecumenical Institute, Switzerland (2000)
Masters degree in Theology - Lebanon / McCormick Theological Seminary, USA (2001)

In addition to his post as president of the Armenian Evangelical community in Syria, he has also been the pastor of Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church in Aleppo since 1992.

Samuel and Arsho's Wedding

Saturday, 1 November, at 6:00pm, Mr. Samuel Demirjian and Ms. Arsho Kazezian got married in the Armenian Evangelical Emmanuel Church. The pastor of the church, Rev. Hovannes Svajian, led the wedding ceremony. During the worship, Rev. Dr. Paul Haidostian gave a sermon in Armenian, Rev. Salim Sabounji a sermon in Arabic, Rev. Soghomon Kilaghbian prayed for the couple, Mrs. Zarmine Semerjian sang "Ourakh Ler", and the choir sang "Ser Dan Mech", with Mr. Garo Avesian accompanying on the piano, and leading the choir.

Congratulations to the newly wed couple, Mr. and Mrs. Sam and Arsho Demirjian.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. ERTUGRUL GUNAY, MINISTER OF TOURISM AND CULTURE

Dear Mr. Minister,

I wish to congratulate the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture for its planned initiative to honor the American-Armenian writer, William Saroyan, with a museum dedicated to him in his ancestral town of Bitlis.

Saroyan was born in Fresno, California, but his forefathers came from Bitlis. The proposed museum will be the first time a diaspora Armenian -- a much-maligned category in some quarters in Turkey -- will be recognized as a fellow "Anatolian" of Turkish citizens today. I
hope your initiative will contribute to a more sympathetic discussion of the Armenian cultural heritage of Anatolia (and there are many beautiful examples of this) and the Anatolian roots of Armenians.

You must be aware that your announcement of establishing a Saroyan museum in Bitlis will lead to some obvious questions: If there were Armenians in Bitlis, what were they like and what happened to them? If there are no Armenians left there, why are they not there today?

Allow me to state that on the eve of World War I, the town of Bitlis had an Armenian population consisting of around 1,140 households, and there were over 70 Armenian inhabited villages around the city. Armenians made up over one-third of the population in this province and lived alongside Kurds and Turks. There were four monasteries in or immediately around Bitlis, plus four churches in the city itself. There was also an Armenian Protestant and an Assyrian church. These churches attested to the typical good relations between Muslims and Christians in the city.


Unfortunately most of the Armenians churches that were left behind in 1915, and practically all cemeteries where Christians were buried (such as Saroyan's ancestors), have been desecrated or plowed under the soil. This is also the case outside of the city where grave robbers still dig around to search for "Armenian gold." While it is true that many Turks and Kurds have defended the dignity of such locations, they have not always been successful. I remember reading on a Turkish Internet site how peasants in the village of Duz, near Bitlis, were trying to save an Armenian church. Their muhtar's sentiment was simple and very moving: "In those days we lived like brothers and sisters with Armenians. We went to our mosques and they went to their church. We now do whatever we can to keep the church standing." ("O dönemlerde
Ermeniler'le kardeÅ~_ gibi yaÅ~_ardık. Bizler camilerimize, onlar da kiliseye giderlerdi. Å~^u anda kilisenin ayakta durması icin ne gerekiyorsa yapıyoruz.") I have personally heard such remarks from many ordinary people in Turkey.

I think it is important for Armenians to come and see for themselves that, whatever the problems Armenians faced in 1915 (it makes no difference whether one calls it genocide, massacre or deportation), there is still a lot of good will among ordinary people in Turkey
today.

I am not sure if you will be able to find the Saroyan house in Bitlis today, but as far as I know, there is at least one Armenian church remaining in the city. It is abandoned and used to be used for storage purposes. It is now owned by the British-American Tobacco Company, hardly befitting a cultural treasure in Turkey. Perhaps as minister of culture you will be able to come to an agreement with the tobacco company and save this building from further deterioration and restore it as a cultural treasure in the name of William Saroyan. The projected Saroyan museum could thus become an offering for a happy future, when people love and respect each other and celebrate their differences as fellow human beings and Anatolians. Such a vision would be fitting
to Saroyan's memory.

Armenian national men’s team wins Chess Olympiad


Armenian national men’s team won the Chess Olympiad in Dresden, defeating China 2,5:1,5.

Levon Aronyan and Gabriel Sargsyan played in a draw while Tigran Petrosyan defeated his Chinese opponent and secured victory for the Armenian team.

The Armenian chess team confirmed its title of the world leader once again after the outstanding victory in Turin in 2006.

The spiritual life of the youth is much better than I really expected.

This was the very impression that the Reverend Calvin Sagherian had during his short stop in Lebanon along his journey visiting the seven churches of the Book of Revelations.

Pastor Calvin - who was the Campus Minister at Haigazian University for many years - has discipled many of today's youth leaders. The Emmanuel Church Youth had the privilege to have a dinner night with him and recalled the most cherished memories of the university days, on and off campus.

On Saturday evening, October 11 2008, the Giragnoria, Badaniatz and Chanitz leaders from all the Armenian Evangelical Churches gathered at Kchag church to listen to Pastor Calvin talk on the importance of leaders in today's' world.

The world is hungry for heroes. People seek guidance at every corner of their lives. That is why it is of utmost importance for leaders to lead lives based on integrity and on the teachings of the Bible.

Writer Hrant Dink was the first victim, killed last year because some in Turkey could not tolerate what he stood for. To nationalists, he was a traitor.

In a country where every citizen is defined as a Turk, Hrant Dink defined himself as ethnic Armenian. That was already subversive to some. But Mr Dink went further.

He wrote about the expulsion and killing of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman Armenians from eastern Turkey in 1915. To Armenians, and others, that was genocide - a claim Ankara vigorously denies. [...]

'Ergenekon' trial

In that battle for democracy, Hrant Dink was on the frontline. Now there is another sign the fight will be fierce.

Eighty ultra-nationalists are currently on trial just outside Istanbul, accused of plotting to overthrow the government and block democratic reforms.

The prosecutor claims the group - known as Ergenekon - planned a campaign of murder and violence. It was meant to create chaos - and force the military to step in and take control.

Hrant Dink believed Turkey could change. His vision was of a truly democratic republic and the EU accession process was a vital part of that.

To his widow, such change now looks a long way off.

"[Turkey] doesn't want people to express their ethnic identity, or live freely. That doesn't fit the founding ideas of this country,” Rakel says.

"Turkey needs time to adjust. The EU process may help, but my husband's death is their biggest loss."

Հովուական եւ միութենական ծառայութեան զուգահեռ՝ վեր. Գարճեան ծառայած է նաեւ իբրեւ Սուրիոյ Հայ աւետարանական համայնքի համայնքապետ, Հայկազեան համալսարանի եւ Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի աստուածաբանական ճեմարանի հոգաբարձութեանց անդամ եւ ատենապետ, նախագահ Աստուածաբանական ճեմարանին, Հայ աւետարանական համաշխարհային խորհուրդի անդամ եւ նախագահ, Միջին Արեւելքի եկեղեցիներու խորհուրդի Գործադիր մարմինի եւ Եկեղեցիներու համաշխարհային խորհուրդի անդամ։ Ան եղած է նաեւ հայերէն լեզուի դասատու, տնօրէն եւ Հալէպ քոլեճի նախագահ։ Վերապատուելին ունեցած է նաեւ հրատարակչական գործունէութիւն՝ շրջան մը խմբագրելով միութեան «Ջանասէր» պարբերաթերթը եւ հրատարակելով իր քարոզներու շարքերը։

Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիներու միութիւնը երախտագիտութեամբ կ՚անդրադառնայ իր պատուոյ նախագահին՝ վեր. դոկտ. Յովհաննէս Գարճեանի պտղաբեր կեանքին եւ բեղուն ծառայութեան՝ փառք տալով Աստուծոյ անոր համար եւ աղօթելով առ Բարձրեալն, որ յաւիտենական կեանքի յոյսով մխիթարէ տիկին Ռեբեկան, անոր զաւակները եւ թոռները, եւ նման մշակներ հանէ իր հունձքէին։

It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our brother in Christ, the Rev. Hovhannes Karjian, after a long struggle with cancer. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4:45 p.m. today, November 23, the Lord's Day, at his home in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Rebecca, and his daughter, Pauline, at his side.

Rev. Karjian departed this life at age 81 after many years of devoted pastoral service to the Lord, particularly in the Near East, where he was the President of the Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East. He also served as pastor to the Armenian Evangelical Church in Sydney, Australia, was the president of the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, and is the author of numerous publications on Christian and Armenian topics. After his emigration to the U.S. in 2000, he graciously and willingly served as preacher in the Armenian language at the Armenian Martyrs' Congregational Church in Havertown, Pennsylvania, during a time of pastoral need in the life of the church.

He leaves behind his wife, Rebecca, his children Pauline, Nayiri, Sevan (Balabanian) and Datev, and their families. Arrangements for the memorial service are still being made, and we will communicate those plans to you when they are definite.

Let us pray for God's strength and the hope of the Gospel to surround and sustain the Karjian family in this time of grief, as well as thanking God for Badveli Karjian's service in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
