Armenian national men’s team wins Chess Olympiad

Armenian national men’s team won the Chess Olympiad in Dresden, defeating China 2,5:1,5.

Levon Aronyan and Gabriel Sargsyan played in a draw while Tigran Petrosyan defeated his Chinese opponent and secured victory for the Armenian team.

The Armenian chess team confirmed its title of the world leader once again after the outstanding victory in Turin in 2006.

Rev. Calvin Sagherian in Lebanon, in Kchag

The spiritual life of the youth is much better than I really expected.

This was the very impression that the Reverend Calvin Sagherian had during his short stop in Lebanon along his journey visiting the seven churches of the Book of Revelations.

Pastor Calvin - who was the Campus Minister at Haigazian University for many years - has discipled many of today's youth leaders. The Emmanuel Church Youth had the privilege to have a dinner night with him and recalled the most cherished memories of the university days, on and off campus.

On Saturday evening, October 11 2008, the Giragnoria, Badaniatz and Chanitz leaders from all the Armenian Evangelical Churches gathered at Kchag church to listen to Pastor Calvin talk on the importance of leaders in today's' world.

The world is hungry for heroes. People seek guidance at every corner of their lives. That is why it is of utmost importance for leaders to lead lives based on integrity and on the teachings of the Bible.

Writer Hrant Dink was the first victim, killed last year because some in Turkey could not tolerate what he stood for. To nationalists, he was a traitor.

In a country where every citizen is defined as a Turk, Hrant Dink defined himself as ethnic Armenian. That was already subversive to some. But Mr Dink went further.

He wrote about the expulsion and killing of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman Armenians from eastern Turkey in 1915. To Armenians, and others, that was genocide - a claim Ankara vigorously denies. [...]

'Ergenekon' trial

In that battle for democracy, Hrant Dink was on the frontline. Now there is another sign the fight will be fierce.

Eighty ultra-nationalists are currently on trial just outside Istanbul, accused of plotting to overthrow the government and block democratic reforms.

The prosecutor claims the group - known as Ergenekon - planned a campaign of murder and violence. It was meant to create chaos - and force the military to step in and take control.

Hrant Dink believed Turkey could change. His vision was of a truly democratic republic and the EU accession process was a vital part of that.

To his widow, such change now looks a long way off.

"[Turkey] doesn't want people to express their ethnic identity, or live freely. That doesn't fit the founding ideas of this country,” Rakel says.

"Turkey needs time to adjust. The EU process may help, but my husband's death is their biggest loss."

Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիներու միութիւնը խոր ցաւով կը գուժէ վախճանումը իր բազմավաստակ պատուոյ նախագահին, նախկին նախագահին, անդադրում քարոզիչին, անձնուէր հովիւին եւ ժրաջան առաջնորդին՝ վեր. դոկտ. Յովհաննէս Գարճեանի։ Վերջին քանի մը տարիներուն քաղցկեղի դէմ տարած իր պայքարէն ետք, ան վախճանեցաւ կիրակի, 23 նոյեմբեր 2008-ի կէսօրէ ետք ժամը 4։45-ին, հանդարտ քունի ընթացքին, իր տան մէջ, Սուարթամոր-Փենսիլվանիա (Միացեալ Նահանգներ)։

Վեր. Գարճեան ծնած էր Մարաշ (Թուրքիա), 30 յուլիս 1927-ին։ 1936-ին ընտանիքը կը փոխադրուի Հալէպ, ուր ան նախ կը յաճախէ Հայ աւետարանական Բեթէլ նախակրթարանը, ապա՝ Հալէպ քոլէճ, որուն երկրորդական ուսման ընթացքը կ՚աւարտէ 1945-ին։ Անմիջապէս կը սկսի երիտասարդ Յովհաննէս Գարճեանի քարոզչական-դաստիարակչական ծառայութիւնը՝ Գալատուրանի (Քեսապի շրջան) Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիին եւ նախակրթարանին մէջ։ Բարձրագոյն ուսման պապակը հանգիստ չի ձգեր զինք. ուստի Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի Աստուածաբանական ճեմարանի դասընթացքին կը միանայ շուտով։ 1953-ին կը վկայուի պսակաւոր աստուածաբանութեան եւ պսակաւոր արուեստից վկայականներով, աստուածաբանական դպրոցէն եւ Պէյրութի ամերիկեան համալսարանէն։ Նոյն տարին կ՚ամուսնանայ օրդ. Ռեբեկա Վարդանեանի հետ, եւ ընտանիքը կ՚օրհնուի չորս զաւակներով Փոլին՝ Նայիրի, Սեւան (տիկին Պալապանեան) եւ Տաթեւ-Նշան։

Վերապատուելի Յովհաննէս Գարճեանի հովուական ծառայութիւնը, որ սկսած էր 1945-ին, կը շարունակուի 1953-էն ետք եւս՝ Գամիշլիի Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիին, եւ ապա Հալէպի Հայ աւետարանական Էմմանուէլ եկեղեցիին մէջ, ուր կը ստանայ իր հովուական ձեռնադրութիւնը 1961-ին։ Պէյրութի Հայ Աւետարանական Ա. եկեղեցին անոր հովուական առաջնորդութիւնը կը վայելէ 1978-1986, Լիբանանի ներքին պատերազմի տարիներուն։ 1986-ին ան կ՚ընտրուի միութեան նախագահի պաշտօնը վարելու, նաեւ փոխանորդի միջոցով, տնօրինելու Լիբանանի Հայ աւետարանական համայնքի համայնքապետի պաշտօնը, մինչեւ պաշտօնապէս իր հանգստեան կոչուիլը, 1988-ին։ Բայց վեր. Գարճեանի հասկացողութեան մէջ դադար չկար հոգեւոր հովիւին համար. իբրեւ միութեան նախագահ ծառայած ատեն, ան երկու տարի յանձն առաւ Սիտնիի Հայաստանեայց աւետարանական եկեղեցիի հովւութիւնը, իսկ վերջին տարիներուն Ամերիկա հաստատուելէն ետք, Հեվըրթաունի Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիին հայերէն քարոզելու պարտականութիւնը։

Հովուական եւ միութենական ծառայութեան զուգահեռ՝ վեր. Գարճեան ծառայած է նաեւ իբրեւ Սուրիոյ Հայ աւետարանական համայնքի համայնքապետ, Հայկազեան համալսարանի եւ Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի աստուածաբանական ճեմարանի հոգաբարձութեանց անդամ եւ ատենապետ, նախագահ Աստուածաբանական ճեմարանին, Հայ աւետարանական համաշխարհային խորհուրդի անդամ եւ նախագահ, Միջին Արեւելքի եկեղեցիներու խորհուրդի Գործադիր մարմինի եւ Եկեղեցիներու համաշխարհային խորհուրդի անդամ։ Ան եղած է նաեւ հայերէն լեզուի դասատու, տնօրէն եւ Հալէպ քոլեճի նախագահ։ Վերապատուելին ունեցած է նաեւ հրատարակչական գործունէութիւն՝ շրջան մը խմբագրելով միութեան «Ջանասէր» պարբերաթերթը եւ հրատարակելով իր քարոզներու շարքերը։

Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցիներու միութիւնը երախտագիտութեամբ կ՚անդրադառնայ իր պատուոյ նախագահին՝ վեր. դոկտ. Յովհաննէս Գարճեանի պտղաբեր կեանքին եւ բեղուն ծառայութեան՝ փառք տալով Աստուծոյ անոր համար եւ աղօթելով առ Բարձրեալն, որ յաւիտենական կեանքի յոյսով մխիթարէ տիկին Ռեբեկան, անոր զաւակները եւ թոռները, եւ նման մշակներ հանէ իր հունձքէին։

It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our brother in Christ, the Rev. Hovhannes Karjian, after a long struggle with cancer. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4:45 p.m. today, November 23, the Lord's Day, at his home in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Rebecca, and his daughter, Pauline, at his side.

Rev. Karjian departed this life at age 81 after many years of devoted pastoral service to the Lord, particularly in the Near East, where he was the President of the Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East. He also served as pastor to the Armenian Evangelical Church in Sydney, Australia, was the president of the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, and is the author of numerous publications on Christian and Armenian topics. After his emigration to the U.S. in 2000, he graciously and willingly served as preacher in the Armenian language at the Armenian Martyrs' Congregational Church in Havertown, Pennsylvania, during a time of pastoral need in the life of the church.

He leaves behind his wife, Rebecca, his children Pauline, Nayiri, Sevan (Balabanian) and Datev, and their families. Arrangements for the memorial service are still being made, and we will communicate those plans to you when they are definite.

Let us pray for God's strength and the hope of the Gospel to surround and sustain the Karjian family in this time of grief, as well as thanking God for Badveli Karjian's service in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

«...Զարմանալի՞ է, ուրեմն, որ մեր տօնախմբութիւններուն մասնակցող հաւատացեալներու թիւերը կը պակսին. թէ՝ կը զարմանանք երբ մեր համայնքի զաւակները փոփոխութիւններու պայման կը դնեն, մեր եկեղեցիներուն, մեր ընկերակցութիւններուն եւ մեր հաստատութիւններուն կեանքին իրենց մասնակցութիւնը խոստանալէ առաջ: Զարմանալի՞ է, որ բնաւ տարօրինակ չի հնչեր այլեւս մեր ականջներուն՝ երբ մեր զաւակները անձնապէս կամ նիւթապէս «օգտուիլ» կը փորձեն մեր հաստատութիւններէն, եւ երբ չկարենան գտնել իրենց փափաքածը՝ պարզապէս կը դադրին յաճախելէ եւ մասնակցելէ, եւ կը ձեռնարկեն բամբասանքի:

EQUIP Leadership Training, Volume II

EQUIP (founded by John Maxwell) did it again, this year!
The participants came from Syria and Jordan to Lebanon, to Harissa, where the sessions took place on October 10 and 11.
Rev. Camille Melki, is the coordinator of the event and his team had the event well organized. Mr. Tom Atema, the speaker who gave the lessons to empower the leaders, came to Lebanon on time and he shared, empowered and encouraged the leaders to train other leaders and to have the multiplication effect rather than the additional effect.

The title of the Chapters were:

2- Are We Prepared for Relationships
3- Are We Willing to Focus on Others?
4- Can We Build Mutual Trust?
5- Are We Willing to Invest in Others?
6- Can We Create a Win-Win Relationship?

Our Grandmother's Heritage to Us All

Dearest cousins–nieces–uncles–aunts–sisters and brothers–relatives from near and far,

We are Hassanbeylitsis. Almost all of our great grandparents came from Hassanbeyli–a mountainous region in Cilicia. Some others are from Aintab–Adana and nearby villages and towns.

This is a portion of a letter that was recently found in Germany. I understand other parts of this letter may be around and we are searching for them.

It was written by our grandmother–Yeretsgin Mariam (Mary) Koundakjian–widow of Rev. Hagop Koundakjian of Hassanbeyli (Amanos) of the Armenian Evangelical Church. Medzmama (grandmother) wrote this letter on May 7–1909–after the massacre of our grandfather Hagop and 28 members of his congregation–including cousins and uncles. She addressed this letter to her three daughters–Persape (nee Koundakjian) Badeer–wife of Dr. Sarkis Badeer of Beirut–Lebanon; Helen (nee Koundakjian) Hadidian–wife of Rev. Yenovk Hadidian–Pastor of the Ashrafiyeh Armenian Evangelical Church of Beirut–Lebanon; and Yevnigue–(nee Koundakjian) Jebejian–wife of Dr. Avedis Jebejian of Aleppo–Syria)–as well as to us–their grandchildren.

My dearest children–

I wish I had not been compelled to write about the terrible and frightening tragedies that took place here. The tragedy struck us like a lightning.

With tears in my eyes–I write to you. Your father [Rev. Hagop Koundakjian] was more lucky than we were–because at the beginning of the catastrophe–he was killed on his way to Adana–burned alive inside his church with his 28-person congregation–and did not see the sudden destruction and premeditated attacks on our city.

He did not witness the burning of his city–nor did he hear the shootings by the enemy. He did not see his sisters–brothers and relatives shot to death indiscriminately. On April 11th 1909–we had our Communion [at church–during the service]. It was a rather heartfelt ceremony. Nobody knew that this would be his last sermon...

On the next day–father journeyed for the annual Conference of the Armenian Evangelical Churches. As you might have already heard–all in the group were burned alive in Osmanya and your father was killed with the 28 delegates of the congregation from our church.

We–the womenfolk–were driven [exiled] towards Bakhche–where we are until today. [The Ottoman Turks] threatened us with death if we did not convert to and accept Islam... I want to assure you–my children–that all these difficulties–persecutions and doomsday announcements have strengthened us in our Father–Christianity and belief in God.

Everything down to the roots was destroyed: the church–in which your father served for over 30 years disappeared. But we think of Hebrews 10–verses 32-34 where we read: 'Remember those earlier days after you had received the light–when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property–because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.' Dirty–dry and hard pieces of bread were put in front of us–while the children were dying of starvation ..."

This is only a portion of the letter. All efforts to locate the rest have so far been in vain. But we will continue the search.

ՅՈՎԵԼ ՇՆՈՐՀՕՔԵԱՆ

Անցեալ Փետրուարի արեւոտ օր մը, Հայրենիքի Հ1 կայանէն երկու լրագրողներ զիս այցելեցին Փարիզ՝ եւ հարցազրոյց մը արձանագրեցին: Վերջերս, հետաքրքրութեամբ դիտեցի սալիկ մը որ ուղարկուած էր ինծի Հ1-էն, եւ կը պարունակէր անցեալ Յունիս ամսուն հեռասփռուած յայտագիրը: Հոս պէտք է ընդունիմ որ հեռատեսիլի, եւ ի միջայլոց Հայրենիքի հաղորդումներէ ընդհանրապէս անտեղեակ եմ:
Հաղորդումի «Ծագումով Հայեր» խորագիրը զարմանք պատճառեց ինծի: Արդեօք ե՞ս սխալմամբ ծագումով հայերու հաղորդումի մէջ ինկած էի, կամ թէ հաղորդումը տարօրինակ ձեւով անուանուած էր. որպէս թէ սփիւռքահայերը չըլլային բառին բուն իմաստով՝ ամբողջութեամբ հայեր, այլ՝ ըլլային նախ ուրիշ բան, ետքը՝ միայն ծագումով հայեր: Կուշտը անօթիին վիճակէն եւ հողին վրայ ապրողը՝ ղարիպին զգացումներէն չեն հասկնար: Հողէն զրկուողը որոշապէս աւելի կը կառչի ձեռքը մնացածին՝ անունին, լեզուին, մշակոյթին եւ ազգութեան:
Հարցազրոյցը յաջողապէս համակարգուած էր, այսուհանդերձ, անաւարտ մնացածի զգացումը կը թողէր: Արդարեւ, հարցազրոյցի ընթացքին կ'արտայայտուիմ «որպէս Հայ՝ ունեցած երկու մտահոգութիւններուս» մասին, կը ներկայացնեմ անոնցմէ առաջինը, եւ յանկարծ վերջ կը գտնէ հաղորդումը:
Ազգի եւ հայրենիքի բարգաւաճումը ինծի համար էութեան պատճառի համապատսախան նկատելուս, ներքեւ կը կրկնեմ երկու հարցերը:
Առաջինը, որ հաղորդուած էր, սփիւռքի գոյատեւումն է: Թէպէտ Միջին Արեւելքի մեր գաղութները դարերու պատմութիւն արձանագրած են, յանուն իրաւատեսութեան, պէտք է ընդունինք որ Քրիստոնէական մշակոյթի երկիրներու մէջ, շուտ կը շաղուինք... կը ձուլուինք: Այսօր ու՞ր են տասներորդ դարու Ղրիմի մէջ մեծամասնութիւն կազմող, կամ տասնեօթներորդ դարու Լեհաստանի երեք հարիւր հազար հոգի հաշուող գաղութները: Յիսուն տարի ետք ի՞նչ որակի սփիւռք պիտի ունենանք, եւ ան ի՞նչ մակարդակի նպաստ պիտի բերէ ազգին, մշակոյթին եւ Հայրենիքի բարգաւաճման:
Երկրորդ եւ չհաղորդուած մտահոգութիւնս, Հայրենիքի աւելի արագընթաց բարցաւաճման հարցն է:

Վերջին տարիներու ակնյայտ տնտեսական յառաջխաղացքը
կը բացառէ գաւառը, եւ մասամբ երեւութական է: Դժբախտաբար՝ Համմըր կամ Մէրսէտէս ինքնաշարժերու բարձր համեմատութեամբ չ'որակուիր երկրի մը տնտեսութեան առողջութիւնը: Ճիշդ է որ միջազգային դրամատունը շատ բարձր կ'արժեւորէ անցեալ տարուայ Հայաստանի միջին եկամուտի արձանագրած 13 տոկոսի աճը, սակայն մենք պէտք չէ գոհանանք թիւով մը որ Ափրիկեան կամ Հարաւ-արեւելեան ենթազարգացած երկրի մը գոհունակութիւն կրնայ պատճառել: Մենք ունինք հազարաւոր տարիներու մշակոյթ, ունեցած ենք Սովետական շրջանին որոշ արդիւնաբերական ճարտարարուեստի փորձառութիւն, ունինք զարգացած ժողովուրդ, եւ բազմատեսակ փորձառութիւններով օժտուած Սփիւռքի նեցուկը: Մեր թիրախը, փոխան աճի տոկոսին, պէտք է ըլլայ բարձրացնել Հայաստանի միջին եկամուտի մակարդակը, ներկայի մօտ երեք հազար Եւրոյէն, առնուազն Եւրոպական Միութեան միջինին, որ 2007 թուականին քսան հազար Եւրօ էր:
Խնդիրը նախագահի մը, կամ կառավարութեան մը վրայ չի կայանար, այլ` ընդհանուր, Սովետական շրջանէն ժառանգուած տնտեսական դրութեան վրայ: Նոյնիսկ ամենապարկեշտ եւ անշահախնդիր նախագահ մը, առանց ուժեղ զօրաւիգի չի կրնար փոխել դրութիւնը: Առողջ պետութիւն մը հիմնուած կ'ըլլայ առողջ աշխատավարձ ստացող պետական պաշտօնեաներու, եւ իր կարգին հաշուեքննիչներու վրայ: Աշխատավարձեր, ֆինանսաւորուած տուրքերով: Տուրքեր՝ համեմատուած իւրաքանչիւրի եկամուտին. քիչ շահողէն ոչինչ, շատ շահողէն շատ:
Ներկայի դրութեամբ եւ աշխատավարձերով, բուժքոյր մը կամ ուսուցչուհի մը «կ'ապրի» շնորհիւ «նուէրներու» ստացուած քաղաքացիներէ. եւ դժուար է փոխել այսպիսի սովորութիւններ ու մտայնութիւններ: Քաղաքացին համոզել փոխելու սովորութիւնը, որ փոխան նուէրի, որու արդիւնքը անմիջական է, վճարէ տուրք. տուրք՝ կառավարութեան, որու պատկերը վստահութիւն չէ ներշնչած սերունդներէ ի վեր. դիւրին չէ, բայց ոչ անկարելի:
Այսպիսի զարգացում կարելի է ստանալ, սերունդի փոփոխութեամբ, առ նուազն երեսուն տարուայ ընթացքին, կամ պատրաստուած ծրագրով մը, հինգէն տասը տարուայ ընթացքին: Պէտք եղած յեղաշրջումը, կը կարօտի «Մարշալ ծրագրի» մը, արագընթաց եւ արմատական փոփոխութիւններ կատարելու: Մեքանիզմի մը ամբողջական փոխարինումը ուրիշ տեսակի մեքանիզմով մը, կարելի չէ իրականացնել ընթացաբար, փոխարինելով կտորները մի առ մի, մինչ մեքենան ընթացքի մէջ է:
Զարգացման միջին եզրի արդիւնքները պիտի ըլլան վստահութեան հաստատում՝ ներքին եւ արտաքին, ներդրումներու յաւելում, անգործութեան նուազում՝ մինչեւ չգոյութիւն, աշխատավարձերու յաւելում, եւ հայրենադարձ՝ սփիւռքահայերու որոշ հատուածի մը: Ո՛չ, այս ցնորք չէ, ո՛չ ալ երեւակայական: Ֆրանսայի, Քանատայի, Հոնք
Քոնկի եւ Չինաստանի մէջ հիմնարկներ հաստատելէ, եւ Հայրենիքի տնտեսական մթնոլորտի ու աշխատաւորներու հետ շփումէ ետք, քաջատեղեակ եմ մեր կարողական վիճակէն. բաղդատութեան եզր չկայ Հայրենի, եւ Հարաւ-արեւելեան երկիրներու արհեստավարժ աշխատաւորներու հմտութեան որակի, հասկացողութեան եւ յարմարացումի կարողութիւններուն միջեւ:
Այսպիսի բաղձալի կառոյցի մը համար, սփիւռքի մասնակցութիւնը անհրաժեշտ է: Նախ՝ հարուստ իր արեւմտեան տնտեսութիւններու կառավարական պաշտօններու, կամ սեփական արդիւնաբերութիւններու փորձառութիւններով, բարեփոխութեան ծրագրի մշակման իր մասնակցութիւնը բերելով. ետքը, ծրագրի առաջին փուլի ֆինանսաւորման բաժնեկցելով. եւ ի վերջոյ, զօրաւիգ կանգնելով տեղւոյն իշխանութեանց, որոնք ի գործ պիտի դնեն զայն. այս ունենալով նպատակակէտ, վստահութիւն ներշնչել ժողովուրդին, եւ «համոզել» ներկայի տնտեսական համակարգին կարեւոր դերակատարները, ընդունիլ ըլալիք բարեփոխութիւնները: Բնականաբար ծրագիրը ի գործ պէտք է դրուի տեղւոյն քաղաքագէտներու ղեկավարութեամբ:
Հ1-ի հաղորդումը վստահաբար ժամանակի սահմանափակման պատճառաւ «խուզած» էր վերոյիշեալ մտահոգութիւններէս երկրորդը. մտահոգութիւններ, որոնց ուղղութեամբ յուսով եմ որ Սփիւռքը ի վերջոյ պիտի զգաստանայ, եւ կառուցաւորուի, իր պատասխանատուութիւնը վերցնելու համար: Վերցնելու պատասխանատուութիւնը, որ առ նուազն մենք ալ երկու սերունդ ետք չդառնանք ծագումով հայեր:

Armenian Evangelical Emmanuel Badaniatz Kicks Off with 64 Juinors

Armenian Evangelical Torosian school has opened its doors to many new students. Along with the start of the 2008-2009 academic year at Torosian school, the Armenian Evangelical Emmanuel Church Badaniatz kicked off its weekly gatherings and sessions.

On the first day (Oct. 18) we went up to Kchag, the summer camp center, with 64 junior youth participating, who have been eagerly waiting for Badaniatz to start. They enjoyed the presence of their friends, and the worship time and also the food that was served.

This year, the Badaniatz Leadership Committee has planned a different program, where the first week a guest speaker would introduce the subject, and the week following we would divide into groups and study the subject further.

The leadership committee, all volunteers, is composed of:
- Mr. Manoug Ibitian, as the chairman
- Mrs. Jimmy (Kozman) Ohanian, as the secretary
- Mr. Hagop Gojigian, as the treasurer
- Mr. Raffi Chilingirian, as a member
- Mr. Mike Hagopian, as a member
- Mr. Jano Baghboudarian, as a member
- Ms. Maria Jertidian, as a helping member

Last Night at Kchag dedicated for sharing about Chanitz Camp and about Kchag

On 10 October, 2008, it was the last Kchag Cafe night. This time, it was dedicated for the Chanitz Camp and sharing about it. Also, the veterans shared about their love for Kchag and how many came to know Christ in the Camps that were held here before the war and before the different militias took it as a base in 80's and 90's.
